How to use Prompt Cards
Prompt cards are a simple but very effective resource which discretely provide the opportunity for differentiation.
To create a prompt card, simply put a key word or words relevant to the teaching session, on a card, repeat for as many cards as possible.
These cards can then be used in a variety of ways:
As an introduction to a topic (here they will help determine the extent of prior knowledge)
To recap from a previous session or on completion of that lesson
As a time filler or extension exercise
Revision games
Suggestions in management of your prompt cards:
Give out a card to each group member then ask the learners to go away and research what is on the card. On return feedback their finding to the rest of the group.
Hand out the cards to your learners. Then ask each learner intern to tell you and the group everything they can about the topic on their card. Once that learner has concluded open it out to the other group members.
Alternatively give a one minute time allowance for each card. Which will speed up the pace of the lesson.
Prompt cards can also be used for a team quiz - Identify a key word -
This is a timed game. The team that correctly identifies the most prompt cards will be declared the winners.
Split the class into teams
N.B One teams participates at a time while the other team spectates
Place a learner in the hot seat and hold a prompt card up behind them ensuring all teams can see.
The learner in the hot seat has to guess what is on the cards from clues given i.e "shouted out" by their own team members.
When the correct response is given that learner leaves the hot seat as quickly as possible and is replaced by the next team member.
Continue following this formate until the timer runs out. ( allow 2 or 3 minutes per team)
( NB This game can over excite learners, is fast and furious and will generate quite a bit of noise. Be warmed!)
Be aware that using prompt cards can generate a lot of discussion. If not managed well this could take up considerable class time. If intended such an activity can last the who session.
